Leopold boards have a reputation for sounding deeper than their specification suggests, and the reason is unglamorous. The cases are thick, dense plastic with much less internal volume than they look like they have, and the keycaps are heavy PBT. Neither is exotic; both push the sound downwards.
The result on a Red or Black is a low, muted clack with almost no ring — closer to a modern foamed board than to a contemporary like the Filco, which uses the same switches in a hollower shell. The Brown keeps that low foundation and adds a soft bump on top.
Nothing here is gasket-mounted or foam-filled. Leopold arrived at a similar destination years earlier by simply building the case properly, which is why the boards still hold up against much newer designs.

Genuine Cherry MX on a plate in a thick, dense plastic case, with heavy dye-sublimated PBT keycaps as standard. The FC660M is a 65% layout and the FC750R a tenkeyless; the construction is shared. There is no gasket mount and no foam — the damping comes entirely from case thickness and keycap mass, which is a blunter approach that happens to work.

Why do Leopold keyboards sound so good?
Case density and keycap mass, not any special tuning. The cases are thick plastic with limited internal volume, so there is less space to resonate, and the PBT keycaps are heavy enough to lower the pitch of every keystroke. It is a cruder approach than gasket mounting and foam, and it reaches a similar place.
Is a Leopold better than a Filco?
On sound, generally yes, and they are otherwise close cousins — both are no-nonsense Cherry MX boards with excellent build quality and no software. The Leopold's denser case and thicker keycaps give it a lower, less hollow sound. The Filco is the more neutral presentation of the switch, which some people prefer.
Are Leopold keyboards hot-swappable?
No. The switches are soldered, so the switch you order is the one you keep. That is worth weighing more carefully than usual here, because these boards last a very long time and there is no upgrade path short of desoldering the whole thing.
