The K70 Core takes the opposite approach to the K70 Pro. Instead of an exposed aluminium plate it uses a closed case with two layers of internal dampening, and the difference is immediately audible — it is fuller, lower, and much less bright than the board above it in the range.
The MLX Red is Corsair's own linear switch, factory lubed, and in a damped case it produces a rounded knock rather than a sharp one. Corsair marketed this board on how it sounds, which was a new argument for a mainstream gaming brand, and the result backs it up.
It is a good illustration that gaming keyboards sound bright because of how they are built rather than because of anything inherent to gaming switches. Close the case, add foam, and the same category of switch produces something entirely different.

Is the Corsair K70 Core quieter than the K70 RGB Pro?
Yes, and noticeably. The Pro uses an exposed aluminium plate with almost no damping; the Core is a closed case with two dampening layers. Same brand, same product line, completely different acoustic approach — the Core is fuller and lower, and the Pro is brighter and sharper.
What is a Corsair MLX switch?
Corsair's own mechanical switch, made in-house rather than sourced from Cherry. The MLX Red is a linear that ships factory lubed, which removes most of the scratch that budget switches have. It is broadly comparable to a Cherry MX Red in feel, and in the Core's damped case it sounds fuller than one would in the Pro's exposed plate.
Which K70 should I buy for sound?
The Core, if a deep and controlled sound is what you want. The Pro if you want the exposed-plate look, genuine Cherry switches, or specifically the Speed Silver actuation for competitive play. On sound alone the Core is the better keyboard and the cheaper one, which does not happen often.
