The current MacBook keyboard is a scissor mechanism with roughly a millimetre of travel, mounted directly into the machine's aluminium top case. That mounting is the interesting part: unlike a desktop keyboard sitting on a desk, a laptop keyboard is fixed to a large, thin, hollow piece of metal, which acts as a soundboard for it.
The result is a clean tap with a faint metallic edge and slightly more body than an external Magic Keyboard has. It is quieter than the butterfly keyboards Apple shipped between 2015 and 2019, which were notorious for a sharp, rattly clack, and noticeably softer than any mechanical board. Space and Return are the two keys that stand out, because they are wider, stabilised, and land with more weight behind them.
What it does not have is depth. There is no low end anywhere in the sound, and no second event to hear — no click, no bump, no upstroke. That absence is why a recorded switch layered on top works as well as it does: there is very little already there for it to fight with.

A MacBook keyboard is a scissor mechanism with a rubber dome, the same basic construction as the Magic Keyboard, mounted into the machine's unibody top case rather than a separate chassis. Apple returned to this design across the range after the butterfly mechanism was retired, and travel went back up to roughly a millimetre in the process. Because the assembly is bolted to the laptop's own aluminium shell, the sound is coupled to the whole machine — which is why a MacBook on a glass desk and the same MacBook on a soft mat do not sound the same.

How do I make my MacBook keyboard sound like a mechanical keyboard?
Install a keyboard sound app. It watches for key presses system-wide and plays a recorded mechanical switch sample on each one, in your editor, your terminal, your browser — anywhere. The MacBook keys keep their own quiet, shallow feel, and the sound you hear is a real mechanical board recorded properly. You can send it to headphones so nobody else hears it.
Do MacBook keyboards sound different from each other?
Between current models, barely — an Air and a Pro use the same mechanism and sound close enough that most people could not tell them apart blind. The real break is with the 2015 to 2019 butterfly keyboards, which had almost no travel and a much harder, sharper clack. If your MacBook sounds unusually rattly, that is probably why.
Why do Space and Return sound different from the other keys on a MacBook?
Because they are physically different keys. Wide keys need a stabiliser bar underneath to stop them tilting, and that bar adds its own noise. They also cover more area, so they move more air and land with more of your hand behind them. Good keyboard sound apps record those keys separately rather than reusing the letter sample, because the difference is obvious once you notice it.
