The MX Keys is one of the quietest keyboards Logitech has ever sold, and that is a design goal rather than a side effect. The keys are spherically dished scissor switches with a rubber dome underneath, and Logitech tunes the dome to absorb the press rather than snap through it.
What you get is a soft, low tap with the edges taken off — closer to a padded thud than to the bright click of a Magic Keyboard. The dish in each keycap means your fingertip lands in the centre of the key rather than sliding across it, which removes the scratchy secondary noise that flat caps make. There is essentially no upstroke sound at all.
It is a genuinely pleasant keyboard to listen to, in the sense that you do not. That is exactly why so many MX Keys owners end up adding sound in software: the board gives back almost nothing, and after a while the silence starts to read as vagueness rather than calm.

A scissor mechanism with a rubber dome under each key, in a low-profile chassis with a metal top plate. The spherically dished keycaps are the signature feature and they do more for the sound than they get credit for — a flat cap lets the fingertip slide and scuff, and a dished one does not. Logitech tunes the dome for a soft landing rather than a defined one, which is why the MX Keys feels and sounds more muted than a typical office scissor board.

Is the Logitech MX Keys quiet enough for an office?
It is one of the quietest full-size keyboards you can buy, and it is a standard recommendation for shared offices and for anyone who takes calls at their desk. The dished keycaps and the tuned rubber dome absorb most of what would otherwise be audible. If a colleague can hear your MX Keys from across a room, something else is going on — usually a hard glass desk.
What is the difference between the MX Keys and the MX Mechanical?
They are the same idea built two different ways. The MX Keys is a scissor keyboard with a rubber dome, tuned to be silent. The MX Mechanical uses low-profile Kailh Choc mechanical switches with three times the travel, and it is sold in clicky, tactile, and linear versions — so it can be as loud or as quiet as you want. If you like the MX Keys layout but want feedback, the MX Mechanical is the direct upgrade.
Can I add mechanical keyboard sounds to an MX Keys?
Yes, and it is one of the better candidates for it, precisely because the board itself contributes so little. A sound app plays a recorded switch on every keystroke while the keyboard stays as quiet as it was, so the physical experience is unchanged and you get to choose what it sounds like. Onyx Glide is the closest match to the board's own character; anything with a click is the biggest departure.
