How it

The GMMK 2 shares the Pro's hot-swap flexibility and almost none of its acoustics. It is tray-mounted in a plastic case, so the PCB is bolted rigidly to the shell and the impact of every keystroke goes straight into it. There is minimal internal damping.
The result is brighter, thinner, and hollower than the Pro by a clear margin, with the ring that gasket mounting exists to remove. On the linear versions especially you hear the case as much as the switch.
None of that makes it a bad keyboard for the money, and the hot-swap sockets mean the switch is easy to change. It is just the clearest illustration on this site that the mount, not the switch, is what separates a $70 board from a $170 one.

What is the difference between the GMMK 2 and GMMK Pro?
Structure. The Pro is gasket-mounted in a heavy CNC aluminium case; the GMMK 2 is tray-mounted in plastic. Both are hot-swap and take the same switches, so the feel can be made identical — but the Pro sounds deeper and fuller and the GMMK 2 sounds brighter and hollower, and no switch swap closes that gap.
Can I make a GMMK 2 sound like a GMMK Pro?
Not fully, but you can get closer than you might expect. Foam or the tape mod under the PCB removes most of the hollowness, PBT keycaps lower the pitch, and lubed linears smooth out the rest. What you cannot add is the gasket mount or the mass of an aluminium case, and those are the parts doing the heaviest lifting on the Pro.
Is the GMMK 2 good for a first custom keyboard?
It is a reasonable entry point, mainly because the hot-swap sockets let you try several switch families cheaply without soldering. Just go in knowing that the case is the limiting factor on how good it can sound, and that the money is better spent on the Pro if the sound is what you are chasing.
