The CTRL and ALT are tray-mounted aluminium boards, which is an unusual combination: the metal case keeps things from sounding cheap, but bolting the PCB directly to it means the impact goes straight into the shell. The result is a fairly bright, solid sound with more ring than a gasket-mounted aluminium board would have.
The switch is where these boards get interesting. Halo True and Halo Clear are among the sharpest tactile switches ever sold at volume — the bump is large, sits high in the travel, and produces a distinct snap that a Cherry MX Brown does not come close to. On sound it reads as a defined tick over the keystroke rather than a vague roundness.
The linear versions are more conventional and let the aluminium case dominate, which some people prefer and others find hollow.

The Halo tactile option is genuinely different from a standard Brown — a much larger and sharper bump that sits higher in the travel. What do Halo switches sound like?
Sharper than any Cherry tactile. The Halo bump is large and sits high in the travel, so it produces a distinct tick before the key bottoms out rather than the soft roundness a Cherry MX Brown gives. On a hard aluminium case that tick is very audible. It is a tactile switch that sounds almost clicky without having a click mechanism.
Is the Drop CTRL gasket-mounted?
No — the CTRL and ALT are tray-mounted, with the PCB bolted to the aluminium case. That is a large part of why they sound brighter and ring more than a Keychron Q1 or GMMK Pro. Drop's later boards, including the Sense75, moved to gasket mounting specifically to address it.
Are Drop keyboards hot-swappable?
Yes, the CTRL and ALT both take standard MX switches in hot-swap sockets, so the Halo switches they are known for are a starting point rather than a commitment. Given how divisive Halo switches are, that flexibility is worth more on these boards than on most.
