The Cherry MX versions sound like a well-built conventional board — a dense case, PBT keycaps, and a fairly neutral presentation of whichever switch you chose. Nothing surprising, and nothing wrong with it.
The EC versions are the reason to pay attention. Varmilo's electrocapacitive switches use a rubber dome over a conical spring, read capacitively rather than by a contact leaf — the same principle Topre uses. That mechanism produces a completely different sound: rounder, quieter, and lower, with a soft landing instead of a plastic knock, and none of the spring ping a Cherry switch can have.
It is the closest most people will get to a Topre board without paying Topre prices, and the gap between the two versions of the same keyboard is larger than the gap between any two Cherry switches.

The EC switches are a rubber dome over a conical spring with capacitive sensing, which is the Topre mechanism rather than a mechanical one, despite the boards being sold alongside the mechanical models. Varmilo is also known for elaborate dye-sublimated keycap themes, which are cosmetic but drive a lot of the brand's sales.

What is a Varmilo EC switch?
An electrocapacitive switch: a rubber dome sitting over a conical spring, with the keypress detected by a change in capacitance rather than by two pieces of metal touching. It is the same principle Topre uses. The practical effect is a rounder, quieter, lower sound and a distinctive soft landing that no mechanical switch reproduces.
Is a Varmilo EC board as good as a Topre?
It is the closest alternative at a fraction of the price, and it captures most of the character — the soft landing, the muted low sound, the absence of any plastic snap. Topre enthusiasts will tell you the dome consistency and the tactile shape are not quite the same, and they are right, but the gap is far smaller than the price gap.
Are Varmilo EC switches quieter than Cherry MX?
Noticeably. The rubber dome absorbs the bottom of the keystroke rather than letting plastic hit plastic, and there is no contact leaf or click mechanism to add anything. They are not silent — a dome still makes a sound — but they sit well below any standard Cherry switch, including a Red.
