What a Membrane keyboard
sounds like.

Each button plays a short phrase typed on that switch family, so you are comparing rhythm rather than a single tap. Play two in a row — that is where the difference actually shows up.

These are recordings of the switch family, not of this exact keyboard. That is the honest way to do it — the family is what dominates the sound, and switch options move between model years and regions. Check the listing before buying on the strength of a match here.

你听到的是什么

How it
实际听起来是什么样。

A membrane keyboard has a rubber dome under every key sitting on a printed plastic sheet. Pressing the key collapses the dome, which completes the circuit and provides all of the resistance you feel. There is no mechanism, no separate contact, and nothing designed to produce a sound.

So what you hear is the keycap hitting the plate and the dome collapsing under it — a dull, slightly muddy thud with a rubbery edge to it. Full-size office boards are usually large hollow plastic trays, which adds a cheap ring behind the thud, and the wide keys often rattle because the stabilisers are loose.

The characteristic problem is not volume but definition. A membrane board makes noise; it just does not make an informative noise. Every key sounds broadly the same, the sound arrives after you have already bottomed out, and there is nothing at all on the release.

它为什么是这个声音

The build
藏在噪音背后。

Rubber domes on a membrane sheet in a hollow plastic tray, which is the cheapest possible way to build a keyboard and the reason the design is still everywhere. Because the dome does double duty as both the spring and the switch, there is no way to tune the feel and the sound independently — anything that makes the board quieter also makes it mushier. This is the construction that mechanical switches exist to replace.

值得一问的问题

Membrane keyboard
常见问题。

Can a membrane keyboard sound like a mechanical one?

Not physically — the mechanism that makes the sound simply is not there, and nothing you can do to a rubber dome will produce a click or a tactile bump. In software it is straightforward: a sound app plays a recorded mechanical switch on every keystroke, which is a much bigger improvement here than on a keyboard that already has some character of its own.

Why does my office keyboard sound rattly?

Usually the stabilisers on the wide keys — Space, Enter, Shift, Backspace. Those keys need a wire bar underneath to keep them level, and on cheap boards the bar is loose in its housings and free to buzz on every press. It is the single most audible flaw on a budget membrane keyboard and it gets worse as the board ages.

Is a membrane keyboard worse than a mechanical one?

For sound and feedback, clearly. For everything else it is more of a trade than people admit: membrane boards are cheaper, lighter, quieter in absolute terms, and often more spill-resistant. If the sound and the feel are what you care about, a mechanical board is a real upgrade — and if only the sound is, an app gets you most of the way for a fraction of the money.
