Ducky One 2 Mini
サウンドテスト。

The 60% board that half the internet owned at once, and a useful counter-example: the same Cherry switches as a One 3, in a case with nothing in it. Press play below.

sounds like.

Each button plays a short phrase typed on that switch family, so you are comparing rhythm rather than a single tap. Play two in a row — that is where the difference actually shows up.

These are recordings of the switch family, not of this exact keyboard. That is the honest way to do it — the family is what dominates the sound, and switch options move between model years and regions. Check the listing before buying on the strength of a match here.

いま聞こえているもの

How it
どう鳴るのか。

The One 2 Mini is the One 3's argument for foam. It uses the same genuine Cherry MX switches and the same thick PBT keycaps, in a compact plastic case with no internal damping at all, and the difference is immediately obvious: it rings.

That ring reads as a bright, hollow quality sitting behind every keystroke, most noticeable on the linear versions where there is no click to cover it. The upside of a 60% shell is that there is less internal volume than a full-size board, so the resonance is tighter and higher rather than boomy.

It is the sound a lot of people actually mean when they picture a mechanical keyboard, because for several years this was the keyboard in every desk setup photo. Whether you hear it as lively or as cheap depends largely on what you compared it to first.

The build

Genuine Cherry MX on a plate in a compact plastic 60% case with no foam and no gasket — the standard construction before damping became a default expectation. Thick doubleshot PBT keycaps, which do lower the pitch and are the main reason it does not sound thin despite the empty case. The board is discontinued but remains widely available secondhand and heavily modded.

With no damping in the case, the gap between these three is wider than on a foamed board — there is nothing absorbing the difference. The Blue is the loudest thing here by a distance; the Red is where the case ring is most exposed.

よくある疑問

Ducky One 2 Mini
についての疑問。

Why does the Ducky One 2 Mini sound hollow?

There is no foam in it. The cavity between the PCB and the bottom of the case is empty, and an empty cavity resonates. It was standard construction at the time — Ducky added damping in the One 3 specifically because expectations changed. Foam or the tape mod fixes it, and the One 2 Mini is one of the most commonly modded boards for exactly this reason.

Is the Ducky One 2 Mini still good?

The switches, keycaps, and build quality hold up completely — it is genuine Cherry MX and thick PBT, which is more than many current boards offer. What dates it is the undamped case and the lack of hot-swap. As a base to mod it is excellent; as a board to use untouched it sounds a generation behind, because it is.

Should I buy a One 2 Mini or a One 3 Mini?

The One 3 unless you specifically want the older board cheap. It has the foam that fixes the One 2's main flaw, adds hot-swap options on some versions, and otherwise keeps everything that made the One 2 good. The One 2 Mini is worth it secondhand if you intend to mod it anyway, since you would be pulling it apart regardless.
