How it
どう鳴るのか。
Topre is a rubber dome over a conical spring, with the keypress detected capacitively rather than by two contacts touching. That means there is no click mechanism, no tactile leaf, and no plastic stem slamming into a plastic housing — the dome absorbs the bottom of the travel.
What comes out is the sound the word thock was invented for: low, muted, and rounded, with a soft landing and no attack at the front of it. There is a tactile bump you can feel as the dome collapses, but it makes almost no noise of its own. Realforce boards are also heavy and dense, which pushes everything lower still.
It divides people completely. Half of everyone who tries a Topre board describes it as the best-sounding keyboard they have used; the other half calls it an expensive rubber dome, which is also technically accurate.

What is Topre thock?
The low, muted, rounded sound a Topre switch makes when the rubber dome collapses and absorbs the bottom of the keystroke. There is no plastic-on-plastic impact and no click mechanism, so there is no sharp attack — just a soft landing with a lot of low frequency in it. It is the sound the whole thock vocabulary was originally coined to describe.
Is Topre a mechanical switch?
Technically no. A mechanical switch registers when two pieces of metal touch; a Topre switch registers when a capacitive sensor detects the dome collapsing. It is a rubber dome keyboard with a spring and clever sensing. The distinction matters less in use than it does on paper — Topre boards feel and sound nothing like a cheap membrane keyboard — but it is why the classification argument never quite dies.
Is there a cheaper alternative to Topre?
Varmilo's EC switches use the same dome-over-spring electrocapacitive principle at a fraction of the price and get most of the way there. Niz makes similar boards. None of them is quite a Realforce on dome consistency or tactile shape, but if the sound is what you are after, the cheaper options capture the important part.
