A magnetic switch has nothing in its travel. There is no click collar, no tactile bump, and no physical contact leaf — the board reads the position of a magnet in the stem and decides for itself when the key has registered. Acoustically that makes it the purest linear you can buy: one sound per press, and no attack at the top of it.
Put that in the Q1's gasket-mounted aluminium case with its foam stack, and the Q1 HE ends up sounding low, smooth, and unusually even. There is no sharp edge anywhere in the press, which is why fast typing on it reads as a soft, continuous roll rather than a series of individual events.
The catch worth knowing: because actuation is adjustable and can be set very shallow, people often end up bottoming out less than they would on a mechanical board. That changes the sound in practice — a Q1 HE tuned for gaming is quieter than the same board typed on normally.

The Q1 chassis — CNC aluminium, gasket-mounted, foam-filled — with a Hall-effect PCB and Gateron double-rail magnetic switches read by TMR sensors. Actuation depth is set in software rather than fixed by the switch, and the board supports rapid trigger, where a key resets as soon as it starts moving back up. The double-rail design is Gateron's answer to the wobble that plagued early magnetic switches.

What does a Hall-effect keyboard sound like?
Like a very clean linear. There is no click, no tactile bump, and no metal contact leaf inside the switch, so the only sounds are the stem reaching the bottom of its travel and returning to the top. In a well-built case that comes out low and smooth with no attack — which is why magnetic boards are often described as sounding expensive and slightly characterless at the same time.
Is the Keychron Q1 HE quieter than a normal Q1?
Usually, for two reasons. The magnetic switch removes the tactile bump, which is one less thing making noise, and adjustable actuation means many owners set a shallow trigger point and stop bottoming out as hard. Set the actuation deep and type normally and the two boards are much closer, because the case is doing most of the work in both.
Can I put normal mechanical switches in a Q1 HE?
No. The PCB reads magnets rather than electrical contact, so it only works with Gateron's double-rail magnetic switches. This is the main trade-off of any Hall-effect board: you gain adjustable actuation and rapid trigger, and you give up the enormous switch ecosystem that makes a standard hot-swap board so easy to re-sound later.
