Royal Kludge boards sound like what they are: light plastic cases with very little inside them. The shell is thin, there is usually no foam, and the PCB is tray-mounted, so the case rings and the sound sits high. On the Red version especially you can hear the case more clearly than the switch.
There is also a fair amount of stabiliser rattle on the wide keys straight out of the box — Space and Enter buzz noticeably on most units, which is the single most obvious tell of a budget board. It is fixable with a few minutes and some lubricant, and it is the first thing worth doing to one.
The Blue is loud and bright, the Brown is a thin tactile knock, and the Red is the smoothest of the three while also being the one that exposes the case most. None of it sounds expensive, and at the price nobody should expect it to.

A tray-mounted PCB in a light plastic case with minimal or no internal fill, across a range of layouts from 60% (RK61) through 75% (RK84) to full-size-with-a-knob (RK S98). Most models are hot-swappable, which is genuinely the best thing about them — the switch is the cheapest part of the board to improve, and the sockets mean you can do it without soldering. Stock keycaps are thin ABS.

Why does my Royal Kludge keyboard rattle?
Almost always the stabilisers on the wide keys — Space, Enter, Shift, Backspace. Budget boards ship them dry and loosely fitted, so the wire bar buzzes against its housing on every press. Lubricating the stabilisers with a thick grease is a fifteen-minute job that costs almost nothing and is by far the biggest single improvement available to these boards.
Are Royal Kludge keyboards good for a first mechanical keyboard?
They are a reasonable way to find out which switch family you like without spending much, and most are hot-swappable so you can try several. What you are giving up is the case: thin plastic with no fill sounds hollow and thin, and no switch will fix that. Plenty of people start here and move on, which is a perfectly good outcome for the money.
Can I make a Royal Kludge sound better?
Yes, and cheaply, because everything wrong with it is fixable. Lubricate the stabilisers first — that removes the rattle. Add foam or tape under the PCB to kill the hollowness. Swap the thin ABS keycaps for PBT to lower the pitch. Those three changes cost a fraction of the board and get you most of the way to a keyboard three times the price.
