Most Mac apps follow one system-wide audio output. Change the output in Control Center and music, alerts, video, and app sounds all move together. That is fine until you want mechanical keyboard sounds in your headphones without moving everything else.

TypeLouder includes its own audio-output picker. It can either follow the output macOS is using or remain pinned to any connected device. Your keyboard clicks can go to headphones while a video plays through a display, or to MacBook speakers while music stays on an audio interface.

Send TypeLouder to a specific output #

  1. Connect the headphones, speakers, display, or audio interface to your Mac.
  2. Open TypeLouder from the menu bar.
  3. Open Settings.
  4. Choose Sound.
  5. Open the Audio Output menu.
  6. Select the device by name.

Choose Active Output when you want TypeLouder to follow every future change you make in macOS. Choose a named device when you want the keyboard sounds to stay there independently.

The picker lists every connected Core Audio device that advertises an output stream. Depending on your setup, that can include built-in Mac speakers, wired headphones, AirPods, USB interfaces, Studio Display speakers, HDMI displays, or virtual audio devices.

Keep keyboard sounds private in a shared room #

For an office, library, dorm, or late-night desk:

  1. Connect your headphones.
  2. Pin TypeLouder to those headphones.
  3. Leave your Mac's normal output wherever you want it.
  4. Start with TypeLouder below 30 percent volume.
  5. Type a full paragraph before increasing it.

The lower starting volume matters. A sharp click can be exciting for ten seconds and exhausting after an hour. Ruby Thock or Midnight Thock usually makes a gentler first choice than Frost Click. You can compare all eight in the free keyboard sound lab before installing the app.

Keep the sound out of Zoom, Meet, and FaceTime #

When TypeLouder plays through speakers, a nearby microphone can hear it in exactly the same way it hears a physical keyboard. Noise cancellation may reduce the result, but relying on it is unnecessary.

Pin TypeLouder to headphones instead. The samples then travel electrically to your ears rather than acoustically through the room, leaving nothing for the microphone to capture. This also lets you keep the satisfying feedback during calls without making everybody else listen.

This changes only TypeLouder's generated audio. It cannot silence the physical sound of the keyboard itself.

AirPods work, but wired output feels tighter #

Bluetooth headphones buffer audio before playback. That delay is harmless for music and video, where the system can compensate, but key sounds are triggered live and cannot be scheduled before you press the key. The result can feel like the click lands just after the character appears.

If TypeLouder feels delayed:

  1. Temporarily select MacBook speakers.
  2. Type the same sentence again.
  3. If the sound now feels immediate, Bluetooth—not key detection—is the source of the delay.
  4. Use built-in speakers, wired headphones, or a wired audio interface when the tightest response matters.

You can still prefer AirPods for privacy. The tradeoff is simply worth knowing before blaming the app or the Mac.

What happens when the pinned device disconnects #

TypeLouder remembers a pinned output by its persistent Core Audio identifier. If that device disappears, TypeLouder does not quietly blast the keyboard sounds through another speaker. Settings marks the saved device as disconnected and playback waits for you to reconnect it or choose a new destination.

That behavior is deliberate. An automatic fallback to MacBook speakers would be a bad surprise in the exact office or call scenario where private routing matters most.

If a connected device is missing from the menu:

  • Confirm that macOS can see it in System Settings → Sound → Output.
  • Disconnect and reconnect USB, HDMI, or Bluetooth devices.
  • Reopen the Audio Output menu after the connection finishes.
  • For aggregate or virtual devices, confirm that they expose an output stream.

When to use Active Output instead #

Pinning is not always better. Select Active Output when:

  • You move between a desk and a laptop setup frequently.
  • You already change all Mac audio together from Control Center.
  • You do not want sounds to stop when headphones disconnect.
  • Nobody else shares the room.

Select a named device when privacy or a split audio setup matters more than automatic following.

Try the sound before configuring anything #

The website sound test uses the browser's current output, so it cannot demonstrate TypeLouder's independent Mac routing. It does let you answer the more important first question: do you actually enjoy the sounds?

Open the keyboard sound lab, choose a pack, and type a paragraph. If one of the eight feels right, TypeLouder can keep that sound on the output device you choose across every Mac app.

Frequently asked questions

Can Mac apps use a different audio output from the system output?

Yes, when the app provides its own output-device picker. TypeLouder can follow the macOS default or pin its keyboard sounds to any currently connected output device.

Can I send TypeLouder to AirPods while music plays through speakers?

Yes. Connect the AirPods, select them in TypeLouder's Audio Output menu, and leave the macOS system output on the speakers. Bluetooth can add noticeable sound latency, so wired headphones may feel more immediate.

Will people on a video call hear TypeLouder?

They normally will not hear it when TypeLouder plays only through headphones. If the sounds play through speakers, your microphone may pick them up like any other sound in the room.

What happens if I unplug the selected device?

TypeLouder remembers the pinned device and shows that it is disconnected rather than silently switching the sounds to speakers. Reconnect it or choose another output.
