Three steps to
a real score.
- Pick a sound first. Each pack changes the rhythm you hear, and rhythm is most of what makes typing with sound feel different. Headphones make the effect much stronger.
- Click the words and type. The clock starts on your first keystroke, not on page load. Press space to move to the next word — a wrong word still counts, it just costs you accuracy.
- Run it twice. One score means very little. Do a 30-second run on a quiet pack and another on a clicky one and see which rhythm you actually type better against.
Reading your result
What the
numbers mean.
WPM
Net words per minute. Every five correctly typed characters count as one word, divided by time elapsed. Mistyped characters earn nothing, so accuracy and speed are not separate goals — sloppy speed shows up directly in this number.
Accuracy
The share of your keystrokes that matched the character expected at that moment, including the spaces between words. Corrections do not erase the original mistake, which is why accuracy is the harder number to move.
A rough scale
Around 40 WPM is average for an adult typing on a keyboard daily. 60 to 70 is comfortably quick, 80 to 100 is fast, and above that is competitive territory. Accuracy under 95% usually costs more than raw speed gains.

Is this typing test free?
Yes. The test and all eight keyboard sound packs run entirely in your browser, with no signup and no download. TypeLouder, the macOS app that plays the same sounds system-wide while you type in any application, is a separate $2.99 one-time purchase.
How is WPM calculated?
This test uses net WPM, the standard measure: every five correctly typed characters count as one word, divided by the time elapsed. Incorrect characters are not counted, so a fast run full of typos will score lower than a slower, clean one. Accuracy is tracked separately as the share of keystrokes that matched the expected character.
Why does my keyboard make mechanical sounds on this page?
The page plays a recording of a real mechanical switch on every keystroke. Pick a pack above the test and the sound follows your typing, so you can hear how a clicky, tactile, or linear board would feel to work on before buying one.
Does this typing test record what I type?
No. Nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere. The words are generated in your browser, the comparison happens on your device, and your result disappears the moment you reload the page.
Does typing with sound make you faster?
Sound will not raise your ceiling on its own, but audible feedback does make rhythm easier to hear. Most people find an even, steady sound easier to keep pace with than silence, which is why the deeper, more uniform packs tend to be the comfortable choice for a long session.
Does this work on Windows, Linux, or a phone?
The typing test works in any modern browser on any platform, including phones and tablets. The TypeLouder app that plays these sounds outside the browser is macOS only and requires macOS 15.5 or later.
Can I change the test length?
Yes. Choose 15, 30, or 60 seconds before you start. The timer begins on your first keystroke rather than when the page loads, so you can settle in first, and switching length at any point resets the test.
