Cherry MX Blue vs Brown vs Red vs Black: Hear the Difference
Blue clicks, Brown bumps, Red glides, and Black pushes back. The names are less useful than hearing all four under your own fingers.
Cherry MX colors describe mechanisms, not aesthetics. Blue is clicky, Brown is tactile, and Red and Black are linear. Those mechanisms change the feel, but they also change how many sounds happen during one keystroke and which frequencies carry across a room.

Force figures describe the standard switches. The keyboard case, plate, keycaps, desk, and typing technique also change the sound of physical hardware. A recording captures one complete board, not a universal sound every keyboard with that switch will make.
Cherry MX Blue: the unmistakable click #
Blue has a separate click jacket inside the switch. It creates a high, distinct click on the way down and a lighter one on release. Add the sound of the key bottoming out and one press can produce several overlapping noises.
That is why Blue sounds exciting in a ten-second demo and dominates a shared office. Choose it because you actively want the click, not because “mechanical keyboard” automatically means Blue.

Cherry MX Brown: the middle ground #
Brown keeps a tactile bump but removes the dedicated click mechanism. What remains is mostly the stem reaching the bottom and returning to the top. The result is a lower, rounder knock than Blue.
Brown is not silent. A physical Brown keyboard still makes plenty of bottom-out noise. It is simply less sharp and less likely to cut through conversation. For someone who wants one switch for writing, shortcuts, and games, it is the least specialized choice here.

Cherry MX Red: light and linear #
Red moves smoothly with no bump and no click. At 45 cN it is the lightest of the four, so rapid repeated presses require less effort. The sound is dominated by the bottom-out and the return rather than a mechanism in the middle of travel.
This produces the even thock people often prefer for long listening sessions. The tradeoff is feel: without a bump, light typists may trigger a key accidentally or bottom out harder while adjusting.

Cherry MX Black: Red with a heavier spring #
Black is also linear, but its 60 cN spring asks for a more deliberate press. That stronger return gives it a heavier and typically deeper character than Red. It is useful for people who rest their fingers on keys or dislike accidental presses.
