An optical switch breaks a light beam instead of closing a metal contact. Acoustically that removes one small noise source — there is no contact leaf to tick — and it means the switch can be built as a pure linear with nothing in the travel at all.

The Huntsman V3 Pro sounds accordingly: clean, glassy, and quick, with very little weight behind the press. It is bright rather than deep, and because the actuation point is adjustable and can be set very shallow, competitive players often stop bottoming out entirely, which makes the board quieter in practice than it is on paper.

Razer has added a fair amount of internal foam to this generation, so it is fuller than the early Huntsmans, which were notably hollow and pingy.

What does an optical switch sound like?

Like a clean linear. Breaking a light beam makes no noise of its own, so the only sounds are the stem reaching the bottom of the travel and returning to the top — there is not even the faint tick of a metal contact leaf. That tends to read as glassy and precise rather than warm, which is why optical boards often sound brighter than mechanical ones with the same case.

Is the Huntsman V3 Pro quieter than a BlackWidow?

Quieter than a Green, comparable to an Orange, and generally louder than a dampened Yellow. The bigger factor is how you use it: with actuation set shallow for gaming, many players stop bottoming out, and a key that never reaches the bottom of its travel makes far less noise than one that does.

Can I put mechanical switches in a Huntsman?

No. The PCB uses infrared emitters and receivers to read the switches, so it only works with Razer's optical switches. This is the standard trade-off for optical and magnetic boards — you gain adjustable actuation and rapid trigger, and you give up the enormous aftermarket switch catalogue that makes a standard hot-swap board easy to re-sound.
