How it
どう鳴るのか。
The Q1 is the answer to every complaint about how the K-series sounds. It is a machined aluminium case with the PCB suspended on gasket strips instead of screwed to posts, and it ships with several layers of foam inside. All three of those choices push in the same direction: down.
What comes out is deep, full, and completely lacking the hollow ring the plastic Keychrons have. The linear version in particular produces the low, rounded clack that keyboard build videos are chasing — the sound people describe as expensive, which in this case is literal. The tactile version keeps that low end and adds a defined bump on top of it.
The instructive part is that the Q1 and the K2 can be bought with the same switch and still sound nothing alike. If you take one thing from this page, take that: on any board above the budget tier, you are mostly listening to the case.

The build

A 75% layout in a CNC-machined aluminium case, gasket-mounted — the plate sits on soft strips between the top and bottom halves rather than being bolted down, so it flexes slightly on every press and stops the impact transmitting straight into the case. Keychron ships it with a foam stack between PCB and case, doubleshot PBT keycaps, and screw-in stabilisers, all of which contribute. The Q1 Max adds wireless and a slightly revised internal layout.

Which one to pick
Choosing
the switch.
With this much case doing the work, the gap between the tactile and linear versions is narrower than it would be on a thin plastic board — both come out low and full. Pick the linear if the deep clack is the whole point, and the tactile if you want to feel where the key registers without giving up the low end.

Why does the Keychron Q1 sound so much better than the K2?
Three things, none of them the switch. It is gasket-mounted rather than tray-mounted, so the plate flexes instead of transmitting the impact into the case. It is machined aluminium rather than plastic, which does not ring. And it ships with foam filling the cavity that makes the K2 sound hollow. Put the identical switch in both and they still sound like different keyboards.
Is the Keychron Q1 loud?
It is lower rather than quieter. A gasket-mounted aluminium board with foam produces a deep, full sound instead of a bright, hollow one, and low frequencies carry differently — it is less irritating from across a room even at similar volume. With linear switches it is genuinely unobtrusive; with clicky switches it would not be, but the Q1 is rarely bought that way.
Is the Keychron Q1 worth it over a V-series?
The V-series is the same design in plastic: still gasket-mounted, still foamed, at roughly a third of the price, and it keeps most of the sound. What the Q1 adds is the machined aluminium case and about 1.5 kg of mass, which lowers the sound further and makes the board sit dead still on the desk. If the sound is the reason you are shopping, the V-series gets you most of the way there.
